Australis Reflexology About Reflexology

The practise of Reflexology can be dated back to the Ancient Egyptians. It involves the Reflexologist applying pressure with their thumbs, fingers or knuckles to specific points (known as reflexes) on the client’s feet predominately but also on the hands, lower leg, face & ears. The pressure applied can range from a very light touch, through to medium and deeper pressure within a local reflex area to determine if the tissues over a reflex area feel ‘out of balance’. Skin contains several different types of receptors and free nerve endings that respond to pressure stimuli.

Reflexology is based on the theory that these reflexes on the feet, hands etc correspond to specific organs, muscles, glands, nerves or other part of the body. The body is divided into 10 longitudinal zones and the reflexes on the hands and feet are found at the end of these zones. The stimulation of the body zones through the reflexes, is intended to promote the self-healing powers of the body that are associated with the respective zones. It was originally developed as “Zone Therapy” by a physician called Dr William Fitzgerald in the 1900s.

Then Eunice Ingham, known as the Mother of Reflexology because she brought Reflexology to the public and the non-medical community, refined these techniques in the 1930s by mapping the whole body onto the feet, and her method of foot reflexology is still used today.

The reflexes of the feet are predominantly treated because they contain thousands of nerve endings that supply sensory feedback to the central nervous system and they are generally covered up with socks and shoes, so are more sensitive to treatment.

Australis Reflexology Benefits of Reflexology

Stress can cause many different symptoms in our body and can make a condition that you are living with worse. It might affect how you feel physically, mentally and also how you behave. The soothing, calming and hands-on nature of Reflexology can assist a client’s emotional wellbeing during difficult and stressful times. Reflexology helps the body to respond in its own way and in its own time by relaxing the body, which can support your homeostasis (internal balance), physical and mental wellbeing.

It is a safe and non-invasive therapy that encourages the body’s natural healing ability by helping relieve stress and tension. Reflexology can be used safely alongside standard healthcare to promote better health, but it should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice. It is important to remember that Reflexology is a holistic therapy of healing that treats the whole person, rather than just one symptom. It treats the person living with a condition and can be enjoyed by clients of all ages.

Deep relaxation that Reflexology provides can:

Other things may improve, too, but that happens on an individual basis.

At Australis we encourage our clients to relax their mind and body during their treatment by transporting themselves visually to a calming place like imagining they are at a beach as illustrated below, feeling their feet sink into the sand and water, so that they can start to unwind and allow the reflexologist to commence the relaxing treatment.

During the treatment visualise being at a beach
Feel your feet sink into the sand and water
Look out to the horizon, breathe and relax
Walk along the beach and clear your thoughts
Sit on the sand and enjoy the view

Australis Reflexology The Australis Treatment Service Difference

The Australis Reflexology treatment room has been designed to be a very relaxing and welcoming environment; with soft ambient lighting, calming music and an aromatherapy diffuser to enhance your experience. Before the treatment begins, Caroline will ask you about your current state of health and ask you to sign a consent form for treatment.

Then just take your shoes and socks off and lay on a massage table, visualise a calming place like walking on a beach and Caroline will work on your feet. A soothing wax will be applied to your feet, the treatment will start with a warm-up foot massage then the reflex points of the feet will be worked. Reflexology can induce relaxation, and Caroline can also provide a listening ear and offer support with self-care tips.

Reflexology is mostly a pleasant, relaxing and soothing experience but there may be some short-term discomfort on some points, this may be an indication of congestion or imbalance in a corresponding part of the body. Some clients report feeling tired, nauseous or tearful afterwards, but this usually quickly passes and reflexologists believe that it is part of the healing process because the body is rebalancing and restoring, plus expelling toxins or letting go of suppressed emotions.

Mostly clients report feeling calm and relaxed after a treatment. Your Reflexologist will recommend that you drink plenty of water and try to be gentle on yourself after the treatment, this is a good opportunity to take some extra me-time for yourself.

Treatment sessions last for about one hour. A course of treatment varies in length depending on your needs. Caroline will discuss this with you at the first session. Once an initial treatment course has been given and the body is more balanced, it is beneficial to have regular treatments that will help to maintain health and well-being.

Australis Reflexology About Caroline

AoR BSc (Hons) Lead Reflexologist & Director Australis Reflexology Ltd

I worked as a Clinical Research Scientist for many years in the pharmaceutical industry on Research and Development of new drugs for oncology, orthopaedic & cardiac applications. I then worked in pharmacy and complementary therapy settings before training as a reflexologist.

I have a deep appreciation of the benefits of both medical and holistic therapies and how they can work together for better wellbeing. I’ve benefited greatly from reflexology, as it assisted my recovery after a major operation and eased my menopausal symptoms. It was such a positive experience that it inspired me to train as a reflexologist so that I could help others in the same way. I have a special interest in supporting women with menopausal, hormonal or fertility issues; plus clients with ADHD, autism, depression and anxiety. My focus is to give my clients the most relaxing space possible to allow them to switch off from their busy lives, to support their general physical and mental wellbeing with a caring, tailor-made holistic treatment.

Australis Reflexology is a welcoming and friendly practice in Tadworth (KT20 5TF) with free, onsite parking nestled in the beautiful Epsom Downs region of Surrey (10-minute drive from Epsom Station or a 10-minute walk from Tadworth Station).

"This was my first experience of reflexology. The sessions with Caroline were wonderfully relaxing and rejuvenating and helped me through a really stressful month. Caroline was professional and caring. She explained the process so I knew what to expect and was sensitive to when I needed to be quiet and when it was helpful to talk. I will definitely try it again especially for stress management."
